Bacteremia with Aerococcus sanguinicola: Case Series with

The aerobic catalase-negative gram-positive cocci included in this chapter form a taxonomically diverse group of bacteria that are isolated infrequently as opportunistic agents of infection. The genera Abiotrophia and Granulicatella accommodate organisms previously known as nutritionally variant or satelliting streptococci. Most of the genera described here are catalase-negative facultative Aerococcus sanguinicola corrig. Aerococcus urinae is a member of the bacterial genus Aerococcus. The bacterium is a Gram-positive, catalase-negative coccus growing in clusters. Isolates of this genus were originally isolated in 1953 from samples collected in the air and dust of occupied rooms and were distinguished by their tetrad cellular arrangements. [2] ABSTRACT Aerococcus urinae may cause urinary tract infections, bacteremia, and endocarditis. No standardized susceptibility test methods or interpretive criteria have been proposed for this organism. This study reports the MIC results for 128 A. urinae isolates tested by broth microdilution.

A. urinae was identified, with susceptibility to Penicillin G, Levofloxacin, Tetracycline and Vancomycin and resistance only to Gentamycin and Trimethoprim-Sulfamthoxazole (SXT). Keywords: Aerococcus urinae, UTI, diagnosis, antibiotic resistance 2016-04-21 Abstract. A retrospective chart review was performed on 92 patients from whom 118 isolates of Aerococcus sanguinicola (n = 52) or Aerococcus urinae (n = 66) were obtained from urine cultures between October 2007 and June 2008 to assess clinical presentation and antimicrobial susceptibilities. The mean patient age was 82 (range 24-101) years.

Genus Leuconostoc är katalasnegativa bakterier som i gramfärgat preparat framträder som ovoida kocker. Aerococcus urinae and Aerococcus sanguinicola: Susceptibility testing of 120 isolates to six antimicrobial agents using disk diffusion (EUCAST), etest, and broth microdilution techniques Derya Carkaci, Xiaohui C. Nielsen, Kurt Fuursted, Robert Skov, Ole Skovgaard, Emilio P. Trallero, Reto Lienhard, Jenny Åhman, Erika Matuschek, Gunnar Kahlmeter, Jens J. Christensen * Aerococcus urinae appartient au genre Aerococcus qui comprend à l'heure actuelle 8 espèces : 5 espèces isolées chez l'homme: Aerococcus viridans, espèce type, décrit en 1953, A.urinae (1992), A. christensenii (1999), A. sanguinicola (2001), A. urinaehominis (2001) et 3 espèces isolées chez Aerococcus sanguinicola is a member of the bacterial genus Aerococcus and is a Gram-positive, catalase-negative coccus growing in clusters. This species was defined in 2001 and has since then been increasingly recognized as a pathogen causing urinary tract infections and also invasive infections including infective endocarditis. Nielsen1, Kurt Fuursted2, Robert Skov2, Ole Skovgaard3, Emilio P. We conclude that Aerococcus urinae’s antimicrobial susceptibility for penicillin and cefurox-ime have a strong positive correlation using disk diffusion method. Based on the results we draw to the conclusion that breakpoints for penicillin established by EUCAST could be used to interpret susceptibility to cefuroxime and ceftriaxone.

Aerococcus sanguinicola susceptibility

The isolates had low MICs to amoxicillin, cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, doxycycline, linezolid, meropenem Antimicrobial susceptibility testing may be challenging when examining fastidious microorganisms, to which strains of Aerococcus urinae and Aerococcus sanguinicola belongs.

Aerococcus sanguinicola is sensitive to most antibiotics likely to be used for empirical treatment of septicaemia such as β-lactams and vancomycin [ 5 ]. However, A sanguinicola has often reduced susceptibility to fluoroquinolones [ 1, 3, 5 ]. High-level fluoroquinolone resistance has also been described [ 11 ]. This corresponds to an incidence of approximately 14 cases per 1,000,000 inhabitants per year for A. urinae. The A. urinae and A. sanguinicola patients were old (median age >80 years), predominately of male gender and underlying urological diseases were common. Aerococcus urinae is increasingly recognized as a potentially significant urinary tract bacterium.

Most A. sanguinicola isolates were resistant to ciprofloxacin, whereas most A. urinae isolates had low MICs. Clinical studies are needed to establish clinical breakpoints and optimal treatment. Aerococcus urinae and Aerococcus sanguinicola are relatively newcomers and emerging organisms in clinical and microbiological practice. Both species have worldwide been associated with urinary tract infections. More rarely cases of bacteremia/septicemia and infective endocarditis have been reported. Treatment options are therefore important. A. sanguinicola are catalase-negative, vancomycin-susceptible, gram-positive cocci arranged in clusters and tetrads, as are all Aerococcus species except A. christensenii (which is arranged in short chains).

2018-10-17 Four studies include only A. urinae , whereas 2 studies include A. urinae and A. sanguinicola (in 1 study, 2 isolates of Aerococcus viridans is also presented). In published reports, aerococci are found in 0.25–4% of all urinary samples sent Species belonging to the Aerococcus genus are isolated from the urine and blood of elderly patients suffering from urinary tract infections (UTIs).
